World Entrepreneurship Summit/Sacoma event East Africa

Kenya is regarded as one of the most stable African economies and, until the elections of December 2007 was moving swiftly towards achieving its United Nations Millennium Development Targets with an annual GDP growth rate of 6%.  Much of this has been driven by the energies of Kenya’s entrepreneurs who run the 20,000 microbusinesses and who have the greatest likelihood of sustaining growth and contributing to employment and expanding the tax revenue base for the government. 

Many of these microbusinesses are in city slums and financed through microcredts.  For example, 60% of Nairobi’s city dwellers are in 130 informal settlements around the city in just 5% of the city’s land space.  Small loans help these people to build livelihoods through small scale business and urban farming.

 The WES/Sacoma event is to begin the process of rebuilding people's livelihoods and rekindling interest in the Kenyan and East African economy in the wake of the turbulence of the last few months.  You will have the opportunitity to:

• Hear inspirational speakers
• Meet financiers and venture capitalists with specific interest in the SME sector
• Develop trade partnerships and creat business opportunities for the London 2012 Olympics
• Form partnerhsips for growth
• Participate in action-oriented workshops around environmental entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, youth entrepreneurship, innovation and technology and women's enterprise.
